In short: Kioku has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and it doesn't use the internet. We don't collect, sell or share your personal data. Your photos, bests and settings stay on your phone; your photos are encrypted there and never uploaded.
Who we are
Kioku ("the app", "we") is a memory card game for Android, with Canvas Travel Club. For any question about this policy or your data, write to [email protected].
What stays on your phone
- Your photos. When you add photos in the Cards tab, Android's photo picker gives Kioku only the pictures you choose: Kioku has no access to the rest of your gallery. Kioku keeps a small copy of each (a 512-pixel square, cut from the centre), saved again so that only the picture is kept: the location, date and camera details of the original are removed. The copies are encrypted with a key kept in your phone's secure storage (the Android Keystore), which never leaves the phone. Your originals are never changed, and nothing is uploaded.
- Bests, settings and your player name. Stored only in the app on your phone. If you use Android's backup, Android may include them in your own Google backup, under Google's privacy policy; we can't see it. Your photos are left out of backups: they can only be opened on the phone that encrypted them.
- Your last 1 vs 1 matches. Kioku remembers the last 20 (the friend's name, the game and both players' pairs) to show them on the 1 vs 1 page. They stay on the phone.
No internet
Kioku plays fully offline: the places' photos are inside the app, and the app from Google Play has no permission to use the internet. The links on the About page (Canvas Travel Club, Kiku) open in your browser, only if you tap them.
1 vs 1 over Bluetooth
To play with a friend next to you, Kioku connects the two phones directly over Bluetooth, without the internet. Nothing goes through our servers. During a match the phones send each other the player's name (or the phone's name, if you haven't set one), the cards of the game and every card turned.
When the host plays with their own photos, the photos used in that game (only those) are sent to the friend's phone, encrypted with a key the two phones agree on for that match. The friend's phone keeps them only in its memory, for the match, and forgets them when the match ends, unless the host has allowed them to be kept (Host a game › Let your friend keep them); then they're saved on the friend's phone the same way as their own photos, encrypted. The friend can see the photos on screen, like any card in the game.
Kioku asks for the Nearby devices permission only when you start a 1 vs 1, to find and connect to your friend's phone. It does not use Bluetooth to find your location.
Permissions
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth): to find, connect to and be visible to a friend's phone in 1 vs 1.
- Vibration: a light tap on each pair (you can turn it off in Options).
Kioku doesn't ask for access to your photos or files: Android's photo picker hands over only the pictures you pick.
Test versions
Kioku Dev, the test version used by the developers and testers (not the one on Google Play), can also check our server (updates.mhitra.com) for a newer version and install it, when you tap Check for updates. It sends no personal data; like any website, the server sees your device's IP address while it answers and may keep it briefly in standard server logs.
Children
Kioku isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anyone's personal data, of any age.
Other websites
The app links to the Canvas Travel Club website and to Kiku's page. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
Deleting your data
Everything Kioku keeps is on your phone. To delete your photos, use Cards › My photos › Delete all (or hold one to remove it). To delete everything, clear the app's storage in Android's settings, or uninstall Kioku.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its date. Big changes will also be noted in the app's release notes on Google Play.
