Hotel vs Apartment: Which Is Better for Your Trip?

Here's how to decide whether a hotel or apartment is the better choice for your trip

Comparison between a stylish modern hotel room and a beautiful vacation apartment

When I book a trip, one of the first decisions I make is where I actually want to stay. Not just which city or which neighbourhood, but whether a hotel or an apartment will make the trip easier.

I have stayed in plenty of hotels over the years, but I have also found apartments incredibly useful, especially when travelling for more than a few days.

The right choice usually depends on how long you are staying, who you are travelling with, how much space you need, and what kind of trip you have planned.

Here is how I look at the hotel vs apartment decision, with a few real-life situations where one option makes much more sense than the other.

Hotels: Best When You Want Things to Be Easy

If I am visiting a city for two or three nights, I don't necessarily want to think about groceries, cleaning, check-in instructions or whether there is a washing machine. I want somewhere comfortable, central and easy.

A hotel can make a short break feel much simpler.

You arrive, check in, leave your bags, and you are ready to explore. If something goes wrong with the room, there is usually someone at reception who can help.

This is particularly useful when arriving late at night.

A Practical Example

Imagine you are spending three nights in Rome.

You arrive at 9:30pm after a long flight. With a hotel, you can check in, leave your luggage, have a shower and perhaps order something to eat before going to bed.

With an apartment, you might have to coordinate a self-check-in, find the building, work out which door to use and possibly deal with a lockbox or instructions from the host.

None of that is necessarily difficult, but after travelling all day, I sometimes prefer the simplest possible option.

Hotels also make sense when location is your priority. In many cities, some of the best-located properties are hotels, particularly if you want to be close to major sights or public transport.

it's also worth checking a few practical tips before booking a hotel.

Apartments: Best When You Want Space

Apartments become much more attractive when I am staying somewhere for several days or longer.

Having a separate living area, kitchen and sometimes a washing machine can make a big difference.

It is especially useful if you don't want to eat every meal in a restaurant.

For me, the kitchen isn't necessarily about cooking elaborate meals. Sometimes it is simply nice to have a fridge for breakfast items, somewhere to keep drinks, or the option to make a quick dinner after a long day.

A Practical Example

Let's say you are spending 10 days in Florence.

Eating out three times a day can become expensive, and after several days you may simply want a quiet evening at home.

An apartment gives you the option to buy some fruit, yoghurt, bread and other basics from a local supermarket and have breakfast at home.

You can still go out for dinner and enjoy the local food, but you are not forced to eat out for every meal.

That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of apartment stays.

Travelling as a Couple vs Travelling With a Family

Who you are travelling with can completely change the answer.

For a couple on a weekend city break, a hotel room may be perfectly comfortable.

For a family with two children, however, an apartment can be much more practical.

Having a bedroom separate from the living area means that the children can go to bed while the adults still have somewhere to sit.

A kitchen can also be extremely useful for families, particularly if you are travelling with young children and need to prepare simple meals.

On the other hand, hotels can offer advantages for families too. Some have connecting rooms, family rooms, swimming pools, kids' clubs and breakfast included.

So I wouldn't automatically choose an apartment just because I was travelling with children. I would compare what each property actually offers.

What About Longer Trips?

If I am staying somewhere for a week or two, having more space starts to matter.

After several days, I don't necessarily want to live out of a suitcase in one hotel room.

An apartment can feel more like a temporary home. You can unpack properly, do some laundry and establish a little routine.

This can be particularly useful during a longer European trip.

For example, if you are spending two weeks in Paris, an apartment could allow you to have breakfast at home, do laundry halfway through the trip and have somewhere comfortable to relax in the evening.

You still experience the city like a visitor, but your accommodation doesn't have to feel like a hotel room the entire time.

Apartments Can Be Great for Groups

If you are travelling with friends, an apartment can sometimes offer much better value.

Instead of booking three or four separate hotel rooms, you might find a two- or three-bedroom apartment with a shared living room.

That gives everyone a little more space to spend time together.

But there is one important consideration: privacy.

Sharing an apartment means sharing common areas, and sometimes bathrooms too.

If you are travelling with friends who all have different schedules, a hotel can actually be easier. Everyone has their own room and can come and go without disturbing the others.

Hotels Are Often Better for Business Trips

For a short business trip, I would usually choose a hotel.

If I am only somewhere for one or two nights, I value convenience more than having a kitchen.

A good hotel can provide breakfast, Wi-Fi, a workspace, luggage storage and reception services, all in one place.

And if my flight arrives late or leaves early, I don't want to spend time figuring out apartment check-in arrangements.

For a work trip, time and convenience can be worth paying for.

Think About Your Daily Routine

One question I find useful is:

What am I actually going to do when I'm not sightseeing?

If you plan to spend most of your days outside exploring and only return to your accommodation to sleep, a hotel may be all you need.

It can also be useful to book activities and tours in advance, especially in popular destinations. Browse tours and experiences with GetYourGuide.

If you are travelling slowly, working remotely, staying for a week or more, or simply enjoy having somewhere to relax, an apartment can be a better fit.

For example, I wouldn't necessarily pay extra for a huge apartment in a city where I know I will leave at 8am every morning and come back exhausted at 10pm.

But if I'm spending several days in one place and want slower mornings and relaxed evenings, that extra space becomes much more valuable.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

There isn't one answer that works for every trip.

I would generally choose a hotel when:

  • I'm staying for only a few nights
  • I want a central location
  • I value reception and on-site assistance
  • I don't plan to cook
  • I'm travelling for work
  • I want the simplest possible experience

I would generally choose an apartment when:

  • I'm staying for a week or longer
  • I want more space
  • I'm travelling with family or a group
  • I want access to a kitchen
  • I need a washing machine
  • I want my accommodation to feel more like a home

But I always compare the individual properties rather than assuming one type is automatically better.

A fantastic hotel in the right location can be a much better choice than a mediocre apartment. And a well-located, comfortable apartment can make a longer trip considerably more enjoyable than a small hotel room.
